Defending the Secrecy Bill

Monday, April 2nd 2012

The Department of State Security has posted a bizarre series of advertisements on YouTube defending the Protection of State Information Bill. The ads depict various people – a young schoolgirl, a guy who drives a car for a living, a businesswomen, a guy from some mystery country “up north”, an Asian women who was the victim of a human trafficking syndicate – thanking the South African government.

You’re never quite sure what the government is being thanked for, but it has something to do with keeping information secure. Apparently if it wasn’t for the state keeping secrets, the schoolgirl wouldn’t know who she is, the guy who works as a driver wouldn’t have a driver’s license, the businesswomen’s company would have been hijacked, the guy from “up north” would be dead, and the human trafficking syndicate would operate with impunity. So if you’re against the secrecy bill, you’re obviously for identity theft, fraud, xenophobia and human trafficking.

Can you see the logic? No, neither can we. Maybe it’s a secret: Watch the ads
