Elena Mancebo Masa presents the preliminary findings of a GreaterCapital survey exploring social impact measurement in South Africa.

Key findings:

• A wide variety of people took the survey including consultants and individuals from companies, asset managers, government departments, NGOs and universities.
• A large proportion of the people who took the survey are in positions of responsibility in their respective organisations.
• 61.7% of respondents spend less than 10% of their time doing social impact measurement, while 10.5% spends more than 50%.
• Challenges to measurement included: lack of data, high cost, lack of skills and time and the fact that M&E was not seen as a priority.
• 86.9% of respondents would like to do more work on social impact measurement
• 78.8% are expecting to dedicate more time and resources to social impact measurement in 2013.

Most respondents were interested in a Social Impact Measurement Network, although one warned:

“Be careful of more talk shops - easy in this space.”
