What makes us South African?

Monday, April 4th 2011

What makes you South African? Is it your address? Your passport? The way you cheer for the Boks and Bafana or choke on your drink when the Proteas crash out of the World Cup? Is it knowing that a barbecue with friends will never be as lekker as a braai with your chinas? Or the fact that the parp of a vuvuzela doesn’t make you wince? Ja, well, no, fine.

Celebrating the difference
From Polokwane to Outshoorn, New York to Mumbai, we’re a diverse and far-flung bunch with one thing in common: we call this country home. And because home is where the heart is, the vast majority of us want to do everything we can to help South Africa succeed.

Everyone has something to give
At GreaterGood South Africa, we believe everyone has something to give. We help South Africans to support good causes by giving their time, skills, goods or cash. So far, we have raised over R42 million for non profit organisations. Our online giving community is used by 1,600 causes and almost 10,000 givers and social investors. We have generated over 150,000 hours of volunteer skills and time and  8.6 million second hand and surplus goods. And we were recently voted one of South Africa’s top 10 most trusted non profit organisations.

Work to be done
But to realise the kind of social change South Africa so urgently needs, these numbers are, at best, a good start. We know that there is still so much to do. That is why we are appealing to you to help GreaterGood reach more good causes in South Africa. We are a small team of 18 passionate social activists and because we are run like a business (a tight ship), we have been able to keep our operating expenses to a minimum.

By supporting GreaterGood SA, you will be sharing your gift with at least another 10 South African organisations – that’s because we are able to aggregate your cash, turning every R10 we receive, into R100 for good causes.

Why us?
Because we have an impeccable track record. We are dedicated to real, life-changing impact and ground-up social change. We are non-negotiable when it comes to monitoring and reporting. And we are vocal thought leaders who are not afraid to speak truth to power. When you support us, you know that your money will be spent responsibly and with maximum benefit to people and communities in South Africa.

What makes us South African?
In a country of such immense diversity, it can’t be the language we speak, where we live or even a shared taste for braaivleis. It is rather the recognition that while we face diverse and complex challenges, we are all in this together; that my wellbeing and freedom to live the life I want to depends on you enjoying those same freedoms. By connecting South Africans with good causes that are important to them, GreaterGood South Africa hopes to be a trusted place for our beloved country to come together.
