This Schools Environmental Education Programme/ Cape Flats Nature Trail is hosted four times a year in partnership with the Schools Environmental Education Programme (SEEP). The Trail takes learners from several Cape Flats schools across the old apartheid divides hiking through Wolfgat Nature Reserve and the Philippi horticultural area to the Edith Stephens Wetland Park, learning about the natural and built environment in their city, and developing leadership and teamwork skills. The cost of each Trail is R3900 or R39 per learner.
With each hike, 100 learners from schools across the Cape Flats get to interact with nature on their doorstep and with each other. Many leave the activity having experienced nature for the first time, and having learnt some interesting facts about it. They have had the opportunity to interact with youth from different communities in a neutral and nurturing environment, again often for the first time.
They have fun hiking, but also have the opportunity to practice team work and leadership skills. Cape Flats Nature builds local leadership for conservation action by working with community partners to plan, implement and evaluate activities. Activities have been developed in consultation with community stakeholders through Cape Flats Nature's participatory programme design process.
