Cape Flats Nature’s mission is to contribute to the conservation of the urban lowland fragments of the Cape Floristic Region by catalysing the sustainable management of sites in the City of Cape Town’s biodiversity network through active partnerships between government, the private sector and community-based organisations that deliver benefits to the people of the Cape Flats.
Executive Summary
The Cape Flats is at the heart of the Cape Floristic Region biodiversity hotspot, with over 1400 indigenous plant species that include 131 rare or endangered species of which 76 are narrow endemics. But it is a massive challenge to protect nature in fragmented habitats in an urban setting where poverty is widespread.
At an institutional level, Cape Flats Nature brings the City of Cape Town, the South African National Biodiversity Institute, the Table Mountain Fund (WWF-SA) and the Botanical Society of South Africa together in partnership.
At site level, the project builds local leadership for conservation action by working in partnership with local institutions and community organisations to take conservation action.
Bridge building is not a skill you would expect nature lovers to have. But the nature conservators working with Cape Flats Nature are different. They build bridges between people and nature in a city where very few people know the treasures they have on their doorstep and where the struggle to meet basic needs is a reality for most. They also build bridges between people, uniting the communities of the Cape Flats in conservation action.
