KHAYELTISHA- The AIDS pandemic continues to ravage our country – with only 10% of the world’s population living in sub-Saharan Africa. Although the Western Cape is better off than other areas of the country, the area in which we do our community work, Khayelitsha has an AIDS incidence far above the Provincial average and 24,3% of women attending ante-natal clinics in this area are testing HIV positive. This region has 90% of the global incidence of AIDS. It is estimated that 1,800 South Africans contract the virus every day and with 90% of transmissions being through heterosexual sex and from mother to child; the number of AIDS orphans left as a result is enormous.
RUYTERWACHT- Ruyterwacht is a poor area where the majority of residents are colored and white and is located about 25km from the centre of Cape Town. Current social problems are poverty, unemployment and crime.
Home from Home always relies on the general public to help assist in setting up a home or helping to supply items that are always needed to clothe or educate a child. Home from Home builds and supports Community Homes and cares for children within these Homes. Funds that are donated by donors are used for the building and running costs of the Houses and goes towards the salary of the House mother and assistants. For this reason, Home from Home relies on donations from the public to help give the children a sense of belonging within a family environment.
