Stuff We Need
All Stars Shelter - R 100000.00
Project 1: All stars Shelter for street children This shelter is a current project of this society. It was established in August 1995. The shelter provides accommodation, food, education, therapy etc. to children who previously lived on the streets in the Kempton Park area. The shelter is situated at 38 & 40 Maxwell Street Kempton Park. We accommodate children from the ages of 6-16 years. After taking them in, we start an investigation to see if it is possible to reunite them with their parents. If this is not possible, we would seek alternative care for them for instance, Foster care or a Children’s home. We try to place them in alternative care or to reunite them with their parents within 6 months. In this time period, they attend school at New Nations School in Johannesburg. The shelter provides accommodation for 20 permanent children and 6 drop in children. At the shelter we have 2 Child and Youth Care workers and 1 Outreach worker who work shifts, and who attend to the daily running and needs of the children. The Shelter Manager works from the Child Welfare office and attends to each case individually. He does the investigations, and attends to emotional and spiritual needs of the children.
Child Welfare Feeding Scheme - R 100000.00
Project 3 : Feeding Scheme (25 families) This organisation provides cooked meals for 25 disadvantaged families twice a week. In the past we made up food parcels, which the families would collect, but we decided to change to cooked meals twice a week in order to provide a decent meal to them. The food parcels were made up of donations and food that we bought, but depending on the donations for the week, we sometimes had to hand out insufficient food parcels. Our planning was to involve the parents of these families into group discussions where we could discuss the following topics with them: Life skills Skills for job hunting The preparation of a CV How to budget your money Parenting skills Our aim with the cooked meals is to assist needy families while they are trying to get back on their feet. We are not trying to create dependency that is why we have assessments every three months, to establish whether the family have become self sustainable. If they are not self sustainable we look at the reasons why and focus on the negative areas. To qualify for a food parcel the social workers investigate the circumstances and income of each individual family.
Child Welfare Societ - R 400000.00
Child and Family Welfare Society (staff) At the office we render the following services to the community of Kempton Park: Early intervention Preventative services (empowerment) Crisis intervention Children’s Court investigations Reunification services Foster care services The staffs consist of a programme manager, an office manager, a senior social worker, 2 social workers, an auxiliary worker and 2 auxiliary students.
Penguin Playgroup - R 100000.00
Project 2 : Penguin Playgroup This playgroup is a current project of our society. It is situated on the premises of the Child and Family Welfare organisation of Kempton Park at 19 Maxwell Street, Kempton Park. The Penguin Playgroup accommodates 20 children between the ages of 3-6 years from disadvantaged families in the Kempton Park area. The children are assessed according to their developmental progress once per school term to determine their areas of strengths and weakness and school readiness. The playgroup provides an opportunity for children to receive educational and developmental stimulation. Parents of the children pay a nominal amount according to their income, towards payment of the school teacher. The project is sustained by this society. However there are insufficient funds to cover all our expenses. We do provide these children with snacks as they often arrive at school hungry without having eaten before coming to school.
