Ikhwezi, which is Xhosa for morning star, is a community centre situated on a 2.4 hectare smallholding on the periphery of the Mbekweni Township in the Western Cape Province.
One of the main aims of the trust is to support initiatives by the community to empower themselves to become self sufficient and self sustainable. This is done by providing premises and developing specific skills such as managerial training, exploring of markets and marketing, product development and other business skills. Ikhwezi Crafts is made up of a group of 13 women that adds value to fabric with appliqué work, embroidery, patchwork, crocheting. The group also produces a range of soft toys and quilts. What a double good purchase these are!
