Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT)

Mission Statement
The Endangered Wildlife Trust is dedicated to conserving threatened species and ecosystems in Southern Africa to the benefit of all people. The EWT fulfills its mission by initiating and implementing conservation research and action programmes,  preventing species extinctions and maintaining biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, supporting sustainable natural resources use and management, communicating the principles of sustainable living and empowering people by capacity building, education and awareness programmes to the broadest possible constituency and taking a strong leadership and advocacy role in promoting environmental and social justice.
Executive Summary
The Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) is a conservation organisation, founded in 1973 to conserve threatened species and ecosystems in Southern Africa to benefit the people of the sub-region.

EWT has a vision of healthy planet and an equitable world that values and sustains the diversity of all life. EWT operates uniquely, establishing dedicated working groups through which the mission and objectives of the Trust can be achieved. These working groups comprise the operational units of the organisation and are essentially self-managed programmes harnessing the talent and enthusiasm of a dynamic network of specialists and stakeholders in an area of conservation priority. Existing working groups have developed highly credible track records effecting conservation outcomes.

Taking Ecosystem and Species Conservation Education to new Heights in Environment Week
World Environment Day aims to encourage people to become more active supporters of sustainable and equitable living, to promote awareness and an understanding for the central role that communities play in changing attitudes towards environmental issues, and to develop partnerships that will ensure all nations and people enjoy a safer and more fulfilling future. This special globally recognized day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 to mark the opening of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) was set up as a result.

Lufthansa is the wind beneath this chick's wings!
In a concerted effort to prevent the critically endangered South African Wattled Crane from becoming extinct, the South African Crane Working Group of the Endangered Wildlife Trust, together with Lufthansa German Airlines, recently chartered an aircraft to fly a newly hatched chick from Pietermaritzburg to Johannesburg. The chick is now being puppet-reared in a special facility as part of a programme which aims to ensure the survival of the species by boosting the dwindling population.
