Ikhaya Lothando means “Home of Love”. It is a registered community based organisation that was started around 1994, when there was violence within black communities. The founder members of this organisation started this organisation to have a home for children affected and rendered homeless by political violence. Since there was a Children’s Home in Tembisa, some of those affected were absorbed by the Tembisa Crisis Children Home, it was found that teenage were mostly not accommodated.
In 1997 Ikhaya Lothando Management Board together with the Government came into an agreement that Ikhaya Lothando be registered for teenage boys (between 12-18 years old) who are- neglected, orphaned, abused or battered( including those affected by domestic violence), affected by HIV/ AIDS, boys with behavioural problems, not having a criminal record. The centre is registered and currently accommodates 24 boys but it can accommodate up to 40 boys. The initial funding was from development bank and Department of Public Works. Dormitories, Pre-school, a hall and workshops were erected. Hence it was not registered as a Children’s Home only as it included other facilities to be used by the community.
