The Margaret Maltman Creche aims to develop, nurture and sustain high quality Early Childhood Development programs for underprivileged children, thus contribute to the rebirth of organized social and cultural structures in our communities.
Executive Summary
The Margaret Maltman Creche, is the only facility with adequate infrastructure to cater for young children's needs in the whole township of Kwa - Thema. Due to lack of resources, vandalism and burglaries, the institution nearly closed in 2001.
The situated started to improve in 2002 - 3. Now the creche is slowly regaining its former status as an excellent provider of ECD services in the area.
Early Childhood Development programs and centres in developing countries are still hopelessly under - resourced. A high unemployment rate in South Africa (particularly in black areas) does nothing to improve the situation.
In Kwa - Thema on the East Rand, informal settlements have been growing steadily over the past seven years. Child - Care facilities are scarce. Many unemployed or semi - skilled child - minders operate from poorly equipped or overcrowded home garages. This was one of the reasons why we opened The Margaret Maltman Creche.
