Starfish exists to support orphans and vulnerable children in South Africa by inspiring and mobilising individuals, and enabling communities ravaged by HIV and AIDS. Our goal is to build a global community of individuals and their corporate partners who, through their time, talents, resources and influence, aim to secure the future of these children.
Executive Summary
The Starfish parable challenged a group of highly qualified professionals to overcome their sense of powerlessness and take the decision to act to ensure that the children, orphaned or made vulnerable by the HIV/AIDS epidemic in South Africa, grow up in their own communities to be healthy, educated and socially well-adjusted adults. By applying their business knowledge and experience, leveraging private sector relationships, resources and skills, the Starfish operation allows a small core team of permanent employees to harness the potential of a volunteer community of individuals working in, and engaging, with the private sector.
This same approach has instilled an ethos of accountability through audit partnerships, communication and fund management, diversifying the funds received to preferred project partners, in addition to acting as capacity builders, facilitators and coordinators.
