Executive Summary
Ingwavuma Orphan Care is a non government organisation which was started in June 2000 in response to the growing numbers of orphans caused by the AIDS epidemic. It aims to help the orphans not by providing residential care but by providing support to the communities they live in. Support includes advocacy work to improve access to government services, provision of food parcels and clothes to some families, ensuring children remain at school through provision of school uniforms & school stationary, workshops for orphans and their care givers to educate about rights and responsibilities, working alongside other NGO's and government departments to improve food security and job opportunities. We also provide psychosocial support through running after school clubs at schools and holiday camps for orphans.
Ingwavuma Orphan Care also provides home based care to about 700 patients in the area the majority of who are children and adults dying of AIDS. 20 care givers and about 30 volunteers are supported in this work by a professional nurse and a doctor. The local hospital supplies the project with medical supplies and the project works closely alongside the hospital and clinics.
This family are experiencing the result of the success of the endeavours of Ingwavuma Orphan Care in its efforts to fulfil its pledge to help families of orphaned children. They were a typical case of children left to cope with, not only the despair of losing their parents but also a future with no income, no hope and living in a dilapidated home.
Ingwavuma Orphan Care has extended its assistance beyond matric to ensure that older orphans can go on to achieve a bright future. Last December, 20 students attended a career advice fair in Empangeni. Among them was Thando, a promising student whose father had just passed away before his final exams. His dream was to become a doctor. Orphan Care managed to secure a scholarship for him to attend Wits, where he is now studying hard.
