The College of Magic was established in 1980 to provide desperately needed performance arts training for aspirant magicians and entertainers from all sections of the community.
The organisation is managed and run by a non-executive board, an administrative staff and a voluntary training staff. It derives its income from government and corporate funding, individual donations, fundraising and student fees.
The College offers diploma courses for young people and adults in a variety of areas, including sleight-of-hand, stage magic, mentalism, escapology, ventriloquism, close-up magic, stage illusions, mime, clowning, juggling, lighting, sound and theatre crafts. These courses operate on an extra-mural basis. The College also provides complementary learning media to facilitate with the learning process such as a library and research facility, a video library, and various workshops.
The College prides itself on the individual and expert tuition that the students receive and the hands-on training techniques that are utilised. This is made possible by the talented and dedicated teaching staff that teaches on a voluntary basis at the College. The standards set by the staff are extremely high and the students are regularly evaluated, graded and advised on areas that can be improved. Regular get-togethers, contests and other functions create many performance opportunities.
The College is continually involved in outreach programmes and performances at libraries, fetes, hospitals, children's homes and old age homes. These shows provide an excellent opportunity for the students to obtain "hands-on" experience, which plays a major role in their training.
The success of the College to date has presented the College of Magic with a number of growth opportunities. These opportunities have inspired a number of projects. These projects seek to improve the training and training capabilities/facilities of the College, develop our programme with the marginalised sections of the community, build our students career potential and promote the art of magic among the South African community.
