Greetings!

The Big Days in December

Yesterday, December 1st was World AIDS Day, a yearly, global event promoting awareness and action in the fight against HIV/AIDS. The UNAIDS & World Health Organisations' "AIDS Epidemic Update 2005" estimates that the number of people living with HIV/AIDS has risen to 40.3 million, and 2.3 million of those are children. This year, 4.9 million people were newly infected by HIV and 3.1 million people died of AIDS. Every day in Africa, HIV/AIDS kills 6,300 people and 1,400 newborn babies are infected during childbirth. These numbers are nameless and faceless but behind the statistics are real people - mothers and fathers, teachers and nurses, teenage boys and girls with dreams. On this day, GreaterGood South Africa particularly salutes those volunteer home-based carers who go out every day in communities across South Africa bringing comfort and help to the sick and dying.

December 3rd is the International Day of Disabled Persons and the theme for 2005 is the "Rights of Persons with Disabilities: Action in Development". The observance of this day aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and, importantly, to mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. It is an opportunity to increase awareness of gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life. See our Causes of the Month if you would like to support some of the fantastic organisations working towards these aims.

December 5th is the International Volunteer Day for Economic and Social Development offering an opportunity for volunteer organizations and individual volunteers to make visible their contributions to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. Looking back over this year, we are delighted by the rise of volunteerism we have experienced. Not only was there an amazing response to October's Do It Day, but we have noted a surge of volunteering opportunities and offerings. We salute all of you who have invested your "sweat equity" in making South Africa a better place. In honour of all of those of you who are giving so much of your time, skills and energy, we are busy refining our matching process so that you can find the cause you are seeking more easily.

Causes of the Month - A focus on the well-being of disabled persons
