The Western Cape Education Department believes that there is a crisis with regard to children's reading, writing and maths ability in general. Many schools lack books and activities to support learning in these areas. ELRU has been successfully training teachers to improve their skills in literacy and numeracy from grade R and grade 1 , and to support parents to become involved with their children's learning at home. However, without proper resources (children's books and games), teachers struggle to implement training.
