Change a young woman's life

Monday, November 26th 2012

Now here's a great project to support during 16 Days of Activism. Kim Smith, who grew up in Bishop Lavis, is a warm and charismatic leader with a strong sense of community and huge ambitions to improve women’s lives in South Africa.

She's tackling an issue that we don't usually talk about because we're embarrassed. But it's an issue that is costing young women their education and confidence. According to UNICEF, social taboos and lack of resources mean that schoolgirls in the developing world miss classes or drop out completely because of their period. Many women in South Africa barely have enough money to buy food and pay school fees, let alone buy sanitary pads or tampons every month. In fact, a significant proportion of young girls lose a week of school per month during their period.

Kim’s solution is to develop a low cost menstrual cup which can be reused safely and hygenically for up to 5 years.

With the help of an UnLtd South Africa award, Kim is setting out to educate and empower women to change the negative stigmas against and perceptions of menstruation and create safe and supportive spaces for young women to talk about menstruation. Kim is developing a social enterprise that empowers women of all ages to make helathy, informed choices around menstruation and their reproductive health.

She needs your help to bust taboos and get this off the ground.
