Greetings!

The 23rd of April is World Book Day, and www.GreaterGoodSA.co.za is joining in the global activities to play our part in promoting the importance of literacy and the joy of reading during this month.

Twenty years ago, World Book Day was designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading to encourage everyone, particularly young people, to discover the joy of reading.

In South Africa, poverty excludes many people, especially children, from the enrichment that reading brings. Being able to read, and having access to books, plays a critical part in the unlocking of potential in a human being. A brighter, better future for all South Africans becomes more likely if we are busy now raising generations of thoughtful, independent life-long learners – and reading is the key to that!

www.GreaterGoodSA.co.za is highlighting the work of four important NPOs who work tirelessly to improve literacy education and access to books for South African children and communities.

And you can celebrate World Book Day by participating in our Donate-A-Book campaign during April. By donating a www.GreaterGoodSA.co.za book voucher you will be making a meaningful contribution to Biblionef SA - a book donation agency providing the neediest children with books; READ – an educational trust that helps to improve literacy education and reading; and, The South African Children's Book Forum – an NPO promoting and supporting quality books for young readers.

Various Donate-A-Book vouchers are available:

  • A R50 voucher buys a book for a pre-schooler
  • An R80 voucher buys a book for a high school student
  • A R300 voucher buys a set of 2 children's reference books
  • A R5000 voucher buys a starter library for a poor school

  • Donate-A-Book to a blind child

  • A R100 voucher buys a book for a blind child.

  • The beneficiary of the R100 Donate-A-Book vouchers is Athlone School for the Blind Association's Braille Production programme. They are dedicated to meeting the educational, training and therapeutic needs of blind and visually handicapped learners. Athlone School for Blind aims to create an environment where every child can develop to their fullest potential, irrespective of their disability.

Thank you from the KiDS Foundation:

The KiDS Foundation is absolutely delighted to have received support through the GreaterGood SA website. We are enormously grateful for every donation as it means that we are able to enrich our scholar’s lives further by providing not only their tuition fees, but also the other smaller things which mean so much to them. Items of stationery, textbooks, school bags, sports equipment, school shoes, blazers and uniforms are so useful and often outside of their means.

The funding we have received through www.GreaterGoodSA.co.za has been used to provide one of our Grade 8 Scholars at Springdale Senior Primary School with a new school bag and a stationery pack with ALL that she needs for the year including a Maths set, brand new Colleen pencil crayons (much to her delight!), notebooks, files and writing materials. A big THANK YOU making a gift like this possible. For more information, visit The KiDS Foundation’s information pages on www.GreaterGoodSA.co.za.

1. SOUL TALKS – Only R130!
Rod Suskin

"We need a hard-nosed approach to modern-age spirituality." With these challenging words, Rod Suskin – astrologer, sangoma and sought-after spiritual teacher- sets out to reconcile strands of wisdom from the ancient traditions with the startling insights of contemporary science.

This book is a compilation of five of Rod's popular and stimulating lectures that engage audiences in deep thought, lively debate and great realisation of their own. It is aimed at a general readership of adults ranging from the late teenage years to mature age, and will be particularly rewarding for those interested in exploring metaphysical ideas and to those seeking spiritual paths. Here in one powerful volume, Suskin shares his remarkable personal journey and tackles the profound questions we all ask ourselves.

2. LAUGH THE BELOVED COUNTRY – Only R175!
Harvey Tyson & James Clarke

Archbishop Tutu commented ‘ I could not stop laughing from the very first moment I started reading this manuscript’. This is an eclectic collection of the most entertaining writers of English-language humour in South Africa in the last 200 years. South Africa – boiling pot if ever there was one – has produced an unusual number and a cultural variety of humour, from bitter satire to wild farce; from sharp wit to gentle good humour all found in this very funny book.

3. THE HEALER INSIDE YOU – Only R160!
David Patient and Neil Orr

How do some people with cancer manage to send it into remission? How do a few people with AIDS manage to survive with it for decades, whereas most of its victims die? Why do survivors of chronic illnesses tend to be rebels? Authors Neil Orr and David Patient believe your health has much to do with your mental attitude, and have developed a healing programme based on psychoneuroimmunolgy, or PNI, which will enable you to strengthen your immune system and send illness packing or at least keep it cowering in a corner. The Healer Inside You clearly details the connection between the mind and the body. By means of self-assessment quizzes and assignments it assists you to recognise the sources of stress and anger, and the fears, that inhibit your well-being, and helps you work through them. PNI is not a cure in itself, the authors believe, but together with a healthy lifestyle and a healthy attitude it undoubtedly boosts immunity. If you suffer from a chronic illness or take care of someone who does, or even if you simply want to ward it off, you will find The Healer Inside You an illuminating and rewarding aid to health.

4. A DECADE OF DEMOCRACY – Only R265!
Emma Bedford

To celebrate the tenth anniversary of the first democratic elections, the South African National Gallery, the country’s premier art institution, mounted a comprehensive exhibition featuring works of art made and acquired between 1994 and 2004. This book presents in visual and literary form an astonishing record of the hopes and aspirations, fears and concerns, of South Africans in this extraordinary decade through the eyes of the country’s artists. Illustrated throughout in full colour, this beautifully designed work consists of eleven essays by distinguished commentators on the major acquisitions of the Gallery together with 150 or so reproductions. It provides a fitting way of reflecting on the changes of the last decade and assessing the extent to which transformation has had an impact on South Africa.

5. AFRICAN TREES – Only R295!
Charles Bryant and Brita Lomba

African Trees is primarily an art book containing breathtaking images of some of the most extraordinary and beautiful indigenous trees in Southern and East Africa. Through photographs and text it conveys the magic of African tress and their vital interrelationship with the continent’s people, soil, animals, birds and insects. The book takes the reader on a journey to a range of habitats – from the savannah of the Serengeti and the bushveld of Mpumalanga to riverine forests, woodlands and other fragile ecosystems in the game reserves and national parks of South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Tanzania and Kenya. This celebration of our rich natural tree heritage encourages readers to look beyond the game and the birds, and appreciate the intrinsic beauty of the trees that sustain the wildlife and often ensure its very survival.
