Women in Philanthropy

This is an event highlighting legacy fundraising in October (please note this event is on a Thursday!):

A society grows great when old men (and women) plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.  – Greek Proverb

FUNDRAISING THROUGH BEQUESTS

How Organisations Can Build Successful Legacy Programmes

  • Can any organisation start a bequest programme?
  • What are the key elements that need to be in place to start building a bequest programme?
  • What are the top tips for any organisation looking to enhance or build a bequest programme?

As Baby Boomers retire, we are about to experience the largest transfer of intergenerational wealth that the world has ever witnessed. Successful legacy fundraising requires special skills and knowledge that allows for longer-term relationship building and delicate conversations. We have invited fundraisers from three top Western Cape organisations to help us answer these questions and more.

Come for inspiration, to learn, to share challenges and to connect with women in the philanthropy space.

ABOUT THE PANELISTS

Carol-Ann Brand is an experienced bequest and major donor fundraising professional with more than 10 years’ experience in the NPO sector. She is currently employed at Salesian Institute Youth Projects as their Bequest Officer.  The SIYP Bequest Society is a new initiative which was launched successfully in May this year with a luncheon. The position speaks to Carol-Ann’s love for a challenge and the Institute itself, which has served Cape Town and its communities for more than 100 years, is inspirational. Their programmes include literacy, education, skills training, and the welfare of street children and youth and all youth at risk.

Carol-Ann has a background in the corporate environment in various sectors such as the HR, Property and Textile industries. Her work experience of secretarial duties, diary management, solid computer skills across a range of packages and general administration provided a solid background as she developed her skills to become an experienced major donor fundraiser, recruiting and cultivating major gifts and legacy donations within the NGO environment. At this juncture in my life, being at peace with her ’empty nest’, I have the time, the energy and focus to prioritise my own deep felt desire to ‘give back’ and serve a useful, joyous purpose.  You can learn more about Salesians Youth programmes at https://www.salesianyouth.org.za/.

Margaret Roestorf has a passion for fundraising. She is the Fundraising and Marketing Manager of St Luke’s Hospice where she heads up a large diverse team of fundraisers and personally hold the Trusts and Foundations portfolio.  She has a very hands-on approach and is working closely with Jill Chiappini to expand the St Luke’s Hospice Bequest Programme. Her mission is to inspire individuals, governments and institutions around the world to care and to give generously towards making the world a better and more sustainable place.

Margaret transitioned from a career in media, as a journalist and on the business side of publications, about a decade ago, when she made a life-changing decision to use her skills for good.  As Fundraising Director and the CEO of SANCCOB she changed the financial fate of SANCCOB by raising many millions for seabirds, especially internationally before joining St Luke’s Hospice at the beginning of 2015.  You can learn more about St. Luke’s Hospice at http://www.stlukes.co.za/.

Liz Linsell is a communications and marketing professional with over 25 years’ experience in South Africa, Zimbabwe and the UK. She has been Head of Legacies at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital Trust in Cape Town since 2009, responsible for establishing and developing their Circle of Life Legacy programme. After completing her studies at UCT, Liz started her working life on The Cape Argus as a trainee journalist, moving to the Promotions department where she managed events such as the Two Oceans Marathon, Argus Cycle Tour, Argus Wine Taster of the Year, the Nederburg Auction and TEACH campaign among others. Following a three year stint in Europe as Promotions and Marketing Manager for Best Western Hotels UK, she returned to her homeland Zimbabwe at Independence to found Linsell Saatchi & Saatchi Zimbabwe, which became part of the Saatchi & Saatchi Africa network.

Her advertising agency played pivotal roles in the development and implementation of pan-African marketing and communications in the sub-Saharan region. Seeing the writing on the wall in 2002 she sold her agency and relocated to Cape Town, initially working with the Saatchi & Saatchi Africa network, then in 2004 she formed a marketing and communications consultancy to assist non-profits. She lives in Marina da Gama with her family and is active in the community as a board member of the Zandvlei Trust and Safer Together, a Muizenberg community safety NPO.  You can learn more about Children’s Hospital Trust at http://childrenshospitaltrust.org.za/.

Sarah Scarth (Facilitator) has over 20 years of experience in the civil society both locally in South Africa and internationally. Sarah today works as a fundraising and communications consultant and serves as The Resource Alliance’s Southern Africa Area Representative.  She advises and mentors social impact organisations to diversify and develop their fundraising programmes strategically and sensibly, to ultimately achieve their goals and objectives and bring about positive social change.  You can learn more about The Resource Alliance at http://www.resource-alliance.org/
